I choose this letter to base my Illustrator Alphabet off, I really liked how the letters came together to form a weird form when they were aligned at different angles. The original concept was layer, but I don't think it's immediately clear. I was going after a multi-dimensional layer, not just 2-D one anyway. It's 2-D in the end however.
I started to develop some ideas on how to progress with the mutli-dimensional idea, I came to the idea of creating the letters around a box, or a band however you want to look at it, and placing one character on each of the sides to then create a whole new character of their own. I thought the outcome of the quick-mock ups looked really good. It was my immediate favorite just because of how effective it was and the fact the angle I thought was really spot on. Tilted or moved it doesn't get better then the original.
This was then taken from the above drawings to be then created in illustrator:
I setup my perspective grid to work from, I dragged each letter onto this grid then off again, I did this with only one letter because I then flipped that one to create a perfect mirror reflection instead of using the orange perspective grid lines. This can be seen below where they're reflected onto one another and vice versa.
Put together they created the form perfectly I had drawn previously, so that worked out perfectly for me, but that did take some time, see below. I had to try and align my grids to get the perfect angle again, I used the original W I created in the hand drawn bit to then create this one so below are my first few attempts at getting the perfect angle.
I then created the next 25 characters doing the same process as shown above, it took along time to setup but once I got going on with it, it didn't take that long after that. The result of that however I'm really happy with, they letters all seemed to work really well together.
I then tried to arrange my characters into a layout I really liked, at first I found it hard as I tried conventional ways to lay out the letters but due to their size and shape they really didn't seem to gel well together when I laid them out like that. Not with me anyway, I then decided it was best to lay them out according to the line in where their perspective drives forward.
I finally decided on the layout like this, descending downwards like so, following the lines set-out by the perspective. This worked really well and had a great flow to it. The middle one below been my final resolution.
