OUG505 Crit Final

Although I got a lot of written feedback on this crit, it didn't say very much, mostly praising the strong guidelines I had set. Followed by a few suggestions with where to take it and where to improve. Helpful in helping me identify what I can change, especially adding more gold into the brand, this is something I agree on and debated when creating my guidelines. There wasn't really much more said.

Goldenage: Crit

I'd made two different sets of boards for todays crit, I had a set with writing on then I thought from it been a big crit I'd be able to explain what I'd be doing instead of the writing saying it for me, however it was the type where everyone writes down their comments without the latter. So I showed both sets as they showed something different and together I feel got across the concept better.

The questions I left with these were:

  1. What is to you representative of classic animation?
  2. Is it something you would attend?
  3. Does gold without Golden-age work as a colour scheme?

Studio Brief 2: What's the name?

Really struggled with the name at first, looked at all the other animation festivals whom carried names whihc were a combination of animation (ani) and some other word relating to it for the most part of these. Which is pretty bizarre in it's self, and not too creative for the field it's in.  I didn't want to take that route, but i did explore it.

If I was truly to get across the idea of the era I was wanting to get across (1950) - Golden Age. I should probably just call it just that. It justifies it's self. It's the one Golden Age of animation. (Well american animation). However, I'm not sure how to classify it yet. International Animation festival seems too long.

Fresh Rubber Evaluation

Fresh Rubber is a brand new motorsport blog, opinion and discussion site that intends to rival existing outlets in this category by providing a fresh and stylish fan based approach to issues in motorsport.

Create a series of logos based on the same design principle but with differences in text and colours of text.

Unlike the other briefs however, I was contacted by a friend for this brief to design a series of logos. Although it wasn’t paid work it was valuable experience for me to work with a client. Which taught me how to respond to client feedback and how to act on it as well in response.

The work it’s self was engaging for me because it was unlike any other logo work because it wasn’t working with just typed out letters and required me to construct the letters by hand in Adobe Photoshop one by one. The aesthetic this achieved wasn’t like anything I’d done before because it was so different to the usual stuff I do. It pushed me outside of my comfort zone to take advantage of the skills and techniques I know within Adobe Photoshop and employ them into logo design.

For the above reasons, I’ve really enjoyed doing this brief as it is a departure from the usual as I did with the other briefs, Illustration, it wasn’t a type of logo design that was uninteresting to me because of how different the process working in creating them as well as working off feedback and critique from my client. This made it different to the other briefs in just been something submitted and forgetting about it and it made me passionate about the logos I was created and invested. This is the type of work I would like to create later on, but perhaps with money involved.

Although this work is to carry on past the module deadline, we are working together to create more variants and sizes to the logos at a later date, which would take up unnecessary time on my part.

For the work I have so far which is the near finalized logos, however they mostly require a bit of tweaking, I’m really happy with how they came out in response to the brief he outlined and I think it hits it rather well in terms of what they were asking.

Secret 7" Evaluation

Secret 7” bring together both music and art for a charitable purpose, selling 7” records with artist/student designed sleeves. The secret part coming from the seven tracks by seven different artists, these are kept a secret to the people purchasing the records because the sleeves only give hints to what the record is inside.

Create a record sleeve cover for one of the 7 artists and their tracks.

I choose to design for Lorde’s song ‘Team’ because I felt it was a song that I felt most comfortable with out of them all and it was an artist I listen too. It was just for a quick brief so went with what was familiar so I could get around to designing it faster.

For this brief instead of turning to illustrating it all via illustrator and making it all digitally I thought It’d be a good chance to try out doing everything traditionally instead, combining it all later on Photoshop. Doing this I felt created a completely different aesthetic to my work then I’m normally used to and I liked the outcome of it. The look and feel of it is probably what I’m most pleased about rather then the actual drawing it’s self.

However my design didn’t get selected, although this year all the designs were hand picked by the judges. There were a lot of entries that I didn’t feel should have been selected, as well as that there didn’t seem to be overall that much variety in the ones that were picked, there was quite of a lot of very similar in aesthetic and some in design, which were picked. I found this to be discouraging.

Although I’m happy with the outcome and the concept, I do feel like I had better ideas but I turned them down because I wasn’t able to illustrate it fully how I would have liked so I gave It up and instead went with what I ended up with. I wish I had carried on through with my original idea of encrusting the throat with jewels and having them get mined. It was just too complicated for my to draw because I couldn’t find any reference imagery to see what it’d be like to look from inside the throat through out the teeth and mouth.

Tigerprint Evaluation

Tigerprint are the sole source card makers for Marks and Spencer’s, every month they launch a competition on their website to create patterns and prints.

The brief in March was to create a black and white surface pattern that could be used on cards and other surfaces.

My concept behind the card designs was to use the theme of woodland critters as well as trees, using their faces and trees to create a pattern. I went with this because I wanted it’s a fairly neutral theme that could be used on range of things, however I think here I didn’t really hit the mark with the brief. Although I think they could work for wrapping paper and stationery products I don’t think it would be applicable on a greetings card.

Unlike with Cath Kidston, I’m happy with the visual for these but for a change I’m not with the concept. Particularly because I didn’t want to do something that would be too obvious, so I thought I’d do something near me, woods, and I don’t think it was too applicable for cards but I liked the thought of it.

However my design didn’t end up been in the selected for the winning entries, the winning print was a floral print, which personally defeated the purpose of the competition that was looking for something new, when they already do floral. Which seems to defeat the purpose of it.

Looking back I think I should have spent more time mulling over what the most appropriate visuals and concept was for the card was instead of rushing into it because I wanted to get it down within the day I set my self. Which was what I had done for the previous ones where I had spent awhile thinking on it before acting on it.

Threadless Evaluation

Threadless runs multiple competitions for shirt designs throughout the year and the winning designs are chosen by an online community. The competition they were running this time around was for an Architecture inspired design.

Create a t-shirt design to submit based around the theme of architecture.

The challenge from this really was getting a design in early on in the competition because of how the voting system works. However although I wasn’t late to submit I wanted to anyway to see how I would did. The submissions that had been submitted at the start have remained at the top from the day I submitted, which is discouraging but I do like the opportunity to do it.

I’d just finished a brief all on house building, Redrow, I thought I’d revisit that area and see if I could make something comical out of it. My concept for this was to show the conversion of green houses in Monopoly to the upgraded Red Hotels, although it would have been best to show 4 houses, it would have been impractical and would have been difficult to show the concept as easily as the singular one does.

Although this was another day brief, I did really enjoy it, mostly the illustrating part. I think which became a thing with almost all of the responsive outcomes, I think the main reason been because I like creating imagery and I think as impact seeing a illustration opportunity excites me more then a logo or branding. Even though they still interest me, I prefer the illustration side to things like how I took up the job to illustrate for Redrow, this was made a realization to me through this module.

I enjoyed this brief, even though I don’t see much coming from it, however I liked been able to just pick a brief like this and just go with it and I think I’ll do more of them like it later on in the year because it gave me a good opportunity to explore my illustration skills, even though I did reuse elements from Redrow.

Yoke Evaluation

Yoke, setup by Nathan Bolton and Eve Warren from the third year required entries for their upcoming exhibition called Dialogue. Which later would be combined with one or two other submissions to create a blind collaboration.

Create a design based around the idea of creating a dialogue and to be used in blind collaboration in an exhibition.

I was really looking forward to seeing everyone’s designs combined so I got involved and created my own submission because I was interested in what Eve and Nathan would create out of it and everyone else’s, as well as their own work they do independently.

This was a real quick turn around brief for the most part I spent contemplating the concept because I didn’t want to do something too obvious. I took inspiration from where I live, by the sea, seeing a lot of boats and I always wondered how they would have communicated before things such as radio and other modern developments. The form of communication I found from this was International maritime signals which when together are used a letters while signally they carry other meanings.

From that the visuals followed directly from the concept because it was straight to the point and clear.  Which really helped in this quick turn around brief. I think as well that it was a really good opportunity to get my work outside of the studio and into the real world for a change. It was refreshing more then anything else and been able to attend it and see mine as well as everyone else’s from the course on display.

Although this brief was really quick and simple, it was satisfying because I was able to see the end result in exhibit and unlike the other briefs seeing something happen of it instead of the others where I wont know the results for awhile.
