Design for Print: Workshop 1

We were tasked with writing down in the group on each table to write down what we had learned and thought about the following words: Colour, Format, Production, Processes, Finishing, Stock.

Colour
Perceived by the rods & cones in your eyes. If there is no light, is there colour?
  • RGB - More colour variety compared to CYMK..
  • CYMK
Format
  • It's what it is set out on, for example: A4, DL, Poster, billboard. That is it's format, different formats can take shape in different scales and shapes.
Production
  • Process of making the product, eg: cutting, glueing, binding, stitching, testing.
Processes
  • Methods used to create the product, eg: screen printing, letter press, laser cut.
  • Consider format, function, stock, colour. Etc.
  • Could even been digital processes.
Finishing
  • Related to process, such as spot varnishing, embossing, debossing, foiling, matte/gloss,.
  • Attention to detail, professional touches
Stock
  • The medium you print your work onto. (Paper, metal, etc.)
In our groups with the material we brought in we arranged them according to Format: Boxes, labels, leaflets, bottles and misc (these were the ones we were unable to categorise properly This is shown below, we managed to do this one rather well because obviously format is dictated by it's size and scale so it's easy to pick out the objects rather easily.

After that we had to arrange them according to: Mass production, limited runs and then we realised how we had done it was wrong. Some stuff wasn't 'mass produced' it was more limited as it was done locally so the production size wasn't 'mass' produced as opposed to say a wrap around for a coffee cup which would be used nation-wide.

Process: We arranged these ones by Digital, spot-varnishing, Foil blocking and screen-printing, fabric and debossing/embossing. These were all fairly easy compared to the others as we were able to pick these out due to their appearance (shiny = spot varnish, etc.) it was harder with the other categories because It took some knowledge behind each one along with a little guess work to figure out where to put each item.

Colour: 1 colour, 2 colour, 3 colour, 4 colour and then lots. We spent more time deciding how to organise these then arranging the items which we debated a lot too trying to figure out what was what.

Then we did Cost: which just didn't work out with our group because no one could decide how much a screen print cost and how we would decide what processes and production steps were included in the cost of each single piece. I personally thought the lego R2D2 would have cost the most due to it being lego.

At the end of this we were tasked with setting our own to do list to discover new things out from questions raised from doing this task.

  • Is it cheaper to print onto a bottle or to print and stick a label on?
  • Can you DIY sticker glue instead of buying sticker sheets?
  • How do you design for curved labels, etc.
  • How do you print direct onto plastic.
  • How do you foil block professionally/ Spot varnish
