Module Briefing - Design for Print

Design Production
Studio Brief 1 - Design for Print

Produce a appropriate info-pack for things to know, consider or remember in order to produce successful design for print based media.

Eg: Collection of booklets, series of posters, post cards or mixture.

Consider important of what form and function your info-pack will take.

Consider the stock you are using, process, fonts/font. Tone of voice, clarity of info.

Design for print is all about detail!

Using the seminars and tasks from the module as a starting point for your own individual investigation of the methods.

For submission:
  • Primary & secondary source material, selected, summarised and evaluated appropriately.
  • Demonstrate your understanding of print processes, conventions and creative options from the perspective.
  • Who will be the end user.
  • Remember you don't have to be a good designers to appreciate good design.
  • Ability to organise and effectively organise your body of info in a designed format.
  • Multiple page pdf's & physical. - Whatever is digitally made, be physical.
  • Produce design that is considered and effective.

Be in complete control, even if it's arranged to look casual.
Don't ignore your knowledge of layout.

Considerations:
  • Content should be ordered and informative, a style that you can call your own.
  • Commercial print processes are a concern.
  • Relinquish hands on exploration.
Informed research.

Design for Purpose:
  • Purpose of the info-pack.
  • Who will read it.
  • Who will learn from it.
  • Casual reader / specific market.
  • Own educational point of view.
Completed design boards, demonstrate development of content, context, concept.

Info-pack that identifies a good amount of design for print techniques, processes and technologies.

Keep on blogging.

Chapters might include: colour conventions, inks, stock, format and others.

You will need evidence to research into:
  • Production methods / formats.
  • Stock considerations / finishing.
  • Colour systems.
  • Commercial costings.
  • Type & font usage.
